What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who treats musculoskeletal health concerns with hands-on treatments, involving the manual manipulation of the spine. Through applying pressure with their hands, chiropractors may adjust areas of the body to ease pain and resolve any health concerns.

Classified as a form of alternative medicine, chiropractic care has only recently started to gain traction as a viable treatment method. Rather than relying on traditional western medicine and drugs, chiropractors use natural methods to relieve and resolve pain in the body.

Chiropractors use their hands to feel for and treat problems in the bones, muscles and joints. Using their knowledge and experience, they can also recommend patients stretches and exercises to improve their health, and in some cases, work in physical rehabilitation as well.

Despite being trained incredibly thoroughly, at least in Australia, the chiropractic care industry is still relatively small (in comparison to other medical industries), at 1 billion AUD as of 2020. Chiropractors need to follow a series of strict steps in order to gain the qualifications for professional practice:

  • Complete a Bachelor of Science (Chiropractor) from an Australian university, or a course equivalent at an university abroad
  • Complete a Masters of Clinical Chiropractic
  • Register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA)
  • Continue annual registration with AHPRA and complete compulsory Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses for further career progression

Unlike other medical specialists, patients do not need a referral from a general practitioner to see a chiropractor. Patients can simply visit their local clinics if they feel that their health concerns can be resolved with chiropractic care or related treatments.

If you are looking to learn more about chiropractors, the best way is to gain some first hand experience and visit one for yourself! There are around 5000 practicing chiropractors in Australia currently, so you’re sure to find a chiropractic care clinic near you!
